Transformer tank manufacturing: a practical RFQ checklist for OEMs
By Pankaj Fabricators · Updated

A useful transformer tank request for quotation (RFQ) includes the latest approved drawing, material specification, accessory interfaces, inspection plan, coating requirements and delivery quantity. A kVA or MVA rating alone does not define the fabrication scope.
Start with a controlled drawing package
A general arrangement (GA) drawing explains the overall assembly, but the fabricator also needs the details that control manufacture. Include the drawing number, revision, units, dimensions and the reference surfaces used for inspection. Where a drawing refers to another document, send that document with the enquiry.
Separate the oil-containing tank, cover, conservator, radiator connections and cable boxes in the scope. A dry-type transformer enclosure is a different fabrication requirement; identify it clearly so suppliers are pricing the same assembly. Mark any dimensions awaiting approval before asking for a committed delivery date.
Specify materials and mating parts
Specify the material grade and thickness on the approved design instead of asking a supplier to infer them from transformer rating. List supplied and free-issued parts, including gaskets, fasteners and accessories. This makes quotations easier to compare and helps identify omissions before an order is placed.
Review radiator flange centres, cable-box interfaces, cover holes, valve openings, earthing points and lifting provisions together. If another supplier makes a mating component, give both parties the same interface drawing and revision. Ask the fabricator to identify assumptions or departures in writing.
Agree the inspection and finishing scope
Put dimensional inspection, weld inspection and leakage testing in the RFQ, with the applicable acceptance criteria. Any pressure or vacuum test conditions must come from the approved engineering specification. There is no single test pressure or duration suitable for every tank, and this guide does not prescribe one.
Define the preparation and coating system, colour, internal and external finish, and inspection records you need. Clarify which surfaces must remain uncoated. Ask how openings and finished surfaces will be protected in transport, particularly when the tank will be stored before assembly.
- Approved drawings and revision list
- Material grades, thicknesses and bought-out items
- Interface dimensions and inspection datums
- Test method, acceptance criteria and required records
- Coating, packing, quantity and delivery location
Compare quotations on the same basis
Compare inclusions, exclusions, inspection documents, transport responsibilities and the point at which delivery time begins. A lower price may exclude fittings, coating or testing included in another offer. For repeat orders, state the batch schedule and how drawing changes will be approved.
Pankaj Fabricators accepts enquiries for custom transformer tank fabrication from its VKI Area works in Jaipur. Send the drawing package with quantity and destination so the team can confirm manufacturability and the commercial scope. Confirm project-specific capability in the quotation before releasing production.
Common questions
Can I get a firm tank quotation from the transformer rating alone?
The rating is useful context, but a firm fabrication scope also needs dimensions, materials, interfaces, testing, finishing and quantity. Send the current drawing package with the enquiry.
What should be agreed before transformer tank testing?
Agree the approved test method, conditions, acceptance criteria, witnessing requirements and documentation. The transformer designer or responsible engineer should define the project requirements.
